I have some new friends hanging on the wall. They’re on a poster from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a reproduction of Florine Stettheimer’s oil painting “Spring sale at Bendel’s”. I have never seen the original, but when I saw the reproduction I decided I had to buy it. There’s so much going on, so much movement, that the eye just flows from one character (friend) to the other, really fun and beautiful.

Funny to think that when Florine Stettheimer died in 1944 she asked that all her paintings be destroyed. Fortunately her sister (executor of the estate) refused to do it.

I love the hats and the clothes, the little pouch handbags and also the magnificent colors. I’m also very happy that instead of a blank wall now I have this piece of art to keep me happy and very amused.
Did you know about this artist? Had you seen this painting before?

  1. I haven’t seen that print, but I have the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Hat collection poster. PMA has good stuff. Great choice, I’m with you, it would keep me happy and amused as well.

  2. Oh! It’s lovely and I adore those “Bendel bonnets.” Never heard of this artist but am glad her paintings were not destroyed. Philadelphia Museum has a fabulous hat collection and some wonderful hat books if you ever get over there.

  3. Never heard of this painter before, but doing a “wiki” I learnt she designed the costumes for “4 Saints in 3 Acts” an opera about Spanish Roman-Catholic saints.

  4. Your eyewear tip was tiptop! I own my great great grandmother’s, and it is a perfect prescription. The glasses fold up into a little gold case that is worn on a chain around the neck, touch the little springloaded button and out pops the glasses. Won’t that be fun in church!
    Thanks for the suggestion!
